Drake and Nicki — as a result of feud with Meek Mill— aren’t communicating much these days
Drake just dropped his fourth studio album, Views, and along with his continued success in music, he’s seen his life take different twists and turns, both personally and with other people.
For example, though at one point in their careers they were collaborating on back-to-back albums, Drake says he no longer has a close relationship with Nicki Minaj.
“I don’t really talk to Nicki,” Drake told Zane Lowe on OVOSOUND Radio on Beats 1 on Thursday night. “[She’s a] person I have a lot of love for. A lot of love and a lot of respect. Not only for our past, and how much work and time we put in, but even just the way she dealt with the situation. I understand what love is, and I understand a personal situation. She dealt with me how I would expect her to — which was with class. I could only ever do the same.
“There was points in time where I was sitting there waiting — is this gonna go — how deep is your love? You gotta ask yourself. I always have respect and love for Nicki. Unfortunately, we haven’t spoke. But it is what it is. Even if we don’t speak, she knows what it is. It’s always love.”
Speaking of feuds, there were rumors that Drake, Jay Z and Kanye West had engaged in some drama, but the Hotline Bling rapper not only features them on the new album, he also acknowledges his respect for them individually.
“Sometimes [Jay Z and I] just fall on opposite sides of the spectrum. It’s always mutual respect but sometimes it has to be from afar,” Drake explained.
As for Kanye, who happens to live down the street from the Toronto native, Drake says he loves working with him and hopes to put out a collaborative album sometime soon. “‘Ye is one of my favorite people in the world…I hope we get some more music out. We were supposed to do a mixtape, album together.”
Aside from the ups and downs of whatever it is they are, Drake has continued to build a relationship, musically, with Rihanna. He admits, “It wouldn’t be a record without Rihanna, would it? We do well as a team.”
The duo worked on “Too Good” together for Views, which Drizzy said came to fruition after Rih’s “Work.”
“[I was like] I think I have one that would follow this one up really nicely. It was like a flawless victory when she sent it back. Every nuance, every cadence was perfect…That’s what makes the record.”
In fact, Drake promises nothing between the pair is fabricated. “We’re not forcing some story on people. A lot of the music and energy we have is genuine. We have a genuine energy.”
