Ed Sheeran has quit Twitter, Because of overwhelming abuse from trolls.
“I’ve actually come off Twitter completely. I can’t read it. I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. One comment ruins your day,” the 26-year-old revealed. “The headf–k for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”
Despite the fact he’s tweeted over 32,000 times, Ed Sheeran has never felt like a massive social media fan.
He said in his recent Carpool Karaoke that he doesn’t actually own a mobile phone, for instance, and he’s previously had a year’s hiatus from social media altogether.
Ed Sheeran said he’s recently been targeted by Lady Gaga fans.
“Lady Gaga’s fanbase read an interview in which they assumed I was talking about her and they all fucking hate,” he said.
“So I think Twitter gets on a massive steam roll of assuming things and then you get in the shit.”
He’s the latest celebrity to leave the social media platform thanks to abuse. Normani Kordei of US girl group Fifth Harmony announced in 2016: “I’ve been racially cyberbullied with tweets and pictures so horrific and racially charged that I can’t subject myself any longer to the hate.”
The social media platform has been introducing measures to try to prevent abuse, including a “safe search” function that keeps abusive tweets out of search results.
