Released by the Baltimore Ravens after a disappointing start to the season, Justin Forsett didn’t have to wait long to find a new team. After a workout and visit Tuesday, he is signing with the Detroit Lions.
The Lions have been using pass-catching back Theo Riddick in an expanded role over the last few weeks due to injuries to Ameer Abdullah (who is on injured reserve and not eligible to return until Week 12) and Dwayne Washington, and Riddick has only been sporadically effective on the ground.
Still, Riddick is not a bell-cow back. His strength is as a receiver. Enter Forsett, who has shown in the past that he can carry an every-down role and run between the tackles. He’d averaged 4.9 yards per carry in his career entering this season, and ran for 1,266 yards and eight touchdowns two years ago as the Ravens’ featured back. Injuries limited his effectiveness last season, which was cut short when he broke his right arm in Week 11.
Justin Forsett adds some punch to a Detroit backfield which has been ravaged by injuries.
