Taylor Swift’s New Music Video: ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ and What It Means

Taylor Swift has used her latest video to throw some shade and let the world know she’s heard everything people have been saying about her.

The singer, who dropped the music video for her scathing new single “Look What You Made Me Do” at Sunday night’s VMAs, hid numerous details in plain sight for her fans to see, interpret and discuss.

Taylor Swift appears from the grave, dressed as a zombie, in a three minute video jam-packed laboriously with references to how badly the world has treated her. No frame, no millisecond wasted. The symbolism is so bold one would need to be dead oneself not to pick up on it. Taylor Swift is making a statement about all the bad press she’s gotten in the last year or so with everything from her break up and spat with producer and DJ Calvin Harris, to her highly-publicized falling out with rapper Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian.

Some fans think Taylor Swift took a shot at Kyne West with the lyrics “I don’t like your little games, don’t like your tilted stage/The role you made me play of the fool, no, I don’t like you.” The rapper’s last concert tour featured a floating and tilted stage.

If elements of the scene where Taylor Swift crashes a gold sports car into a pole look familiar, it’s because they are. Taylor Swift’s hair in the scene looks remarkably similar to nemesis Katy Perry’s ‘do, and the sports car itself is undeniably reminiscent to the car in Katy Perry’s 2009 video for “Waking Up in Vegas.” Relatedly, following the slow-motion crash, the camera zooms in on a Grammy Award the singer is holding up; Swift has 10 Grammys while Perry has been nominated for several but has yet to win one.
